Why most Phoenix trash customers will get new collection days

Phoenix plans to change its trash collection routes, and about 80% of customers will be impacted.

Phoenix last updated its collection routes in 2009. Since then, the city has added about 27,000 houses, mostly in the north and southwest areas.

Felipe Moreno, assistant public works director, said a complete re-route will bring a more balanced workload for truck operators and better customer service.

“This reroute is going to allow for the current customer growth we’ve experienced, but also we’ve planned for the next two years of growth that we know that is coming online,” he told a city subcommittee.

Starting in September, residents will be notified through their city services bill, newsletters, and Phoenix’s website and social media channels.

Lorizelda Stoeller said about 10,000 customers who have different collection days for trash and recycling will get extra attention.

“We will reach out personally to those customers, knock on their doors, through our field specialists, they’ll do a dedicated walk and talk for those customers. We do have Spanish-speaking specialists available,” she said.

The public works department expects to begin the new routes on Oct. 3. The city’s quarterly bulk trash pickup collection will stay the same.
