Baja California Sur is now the 9th Mexican state to decriminalize abortion

A ninth state in Mexico has legalized abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Legislators in Baja California Sur voted 16-3 Thursday to decriminalize abortion. That’s just weeks after another state — Guerrero — did the same.

There are now nine states in Mexico that have legalized abortion, most up to about 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Feminist groups are celebrating the continued wave of statute changes, which come after the country’s Supreme Court ruled last year that laws criminalizing abortion are unconstitutional.

However, 13 Mexican states still have statutes outlawing abortion. And activists say that the 12-week cut off is still extremely limiting. They plan to continue helping pregnant people access safe abortions outside of the legal limits.
