Following the shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman spoke at the state Capitol to call on the Legislature to provide funding for schools and campus safety.
Hoffman says the Legislature has yet to act on recommendations her office’s School Safety Task Force has made.
The task force was formed to research and provide recommendations to the state government on how to make campuses safer.
One key to that, Hoffman says, is mental health resources.
"I want to make it very clear that those living with mental illness are often victims of violent crimes. Adding more mental health resources simply makes everyone in our community safer," Hoffman said.
Still with no word on the budget, Hoffman called to make pandemic funding that helped schools hire more counselors permanent.
