The mayor of the Sonoran capital Hermosillo is rolling out a plan to address the city’s water woes.
Mayor Antonio Astiazarán said the city government is spending some $5 million on repairs and equipment to help the state capital and largest city avoid a water crisis.
Roughly a fifth of that money went to rehabilitate 18 wells of the city’s system of 80 that is the single most important source of water for Hermosillo. Additionally, a surveillance system will be installed that could speed the detection of and response to system failures.
Rooftop water storage units known as tinacos will also be given out in certain parts of the city, along with water meters for some of the many homes in Hermosillo that do not have them.
