In Sonora right now, you have two choices: severe drought or extreme drought.
Half of its 72 municipalities are considered to have the former by the National Water Commission, and the other half the latter.
According to the commission's most recent drought report, Sonora is among the most impacted Mexican states right now. Compared to the same period in recent years, it’s also one of the driest, though last year there were 22 municipalities with exceptional drought, the highest rating on the scale.
Levelsin the state’s reservoir system are also troubling, sitting at well under 20% full, according to the commission.
Experts worry that without good monsoon rains, cities and the state’s key agricultural sector could face serious shortages.
