COVID-19 cases appear to be on the rise in neighboring Sonora, and across Mexico.
The week ending on May 28, there were 47 new confirmed COVID cases in Sonora, according to state health authorities. But the following week, the figure nearly tripledto 131, though no new deaths were recorded.
Federal authorities say they are observinga similar growth trend nationwide, but that there is not yet any discernible impact on hospitalizations or deaths.
This week, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, the head of Mexico’s COVID response, was asked about the possible impacts of another surge, and said that widespread vaccinations have significantly reduced the most serious impacts of infection waves.
