Nearly two years after a mask mandate was implemented in Sonora amid the height of the pandemic, legislators voted this week to lift the measure.
Sonoran legislators voted 21-3 to revoke a November 2020 law that made face masks mandatory in all public spaces.
The change comes at the urging of Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo, who announced last month that mask mandates would be lifted.
Lawmakers who voted in favor of revoking the law said that the measure is no longer necessary at this point. While those opposed pointed to rising COVID-19 cases in the state and across the country to argue for continuing to require face coverings.
The change will go into effect as soon as an official bulletin is published by the state.
