The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that trucks will be restricted to drive in the right lane only for a portion of the I-10.
The department says the restriction for a 20-mile stretch between Phoenix and Casa Grande is a temporary safety measure as the area has yet to be expanded to three lanes.
Garin Groff is a spokesperson for the department.
"Given that heavy-truck traffic is involved in more crashes than the overall heavy-truck traffic in the area, this is a attempt to try to reduce the number of heavy-truck related incidents in the area," Groff said.
The head of the Arizona Trucking Association Anthony Bradley said he believes the decision will lead to complicating factors that will make traffic worse in the area.
"We let them know that a lot of those accidents are probably the cause of the speeding cars that are traveling recklessly throughout that corridor," Bradley said.
The signs notifying the restrictions will be up until the improvement project starts in 2023.
