Where mental illness and violence intersect — and where they don't

In the wake of mass shootings, the conversation often turns to guns and mental health.

Since the murder of 19 children and two adults at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last month, there have been countless politicians who blame mental illness — and not guns — for the violence.

Olson is the chair of the psychiatry department for Valleywise Health, the large, public safety net hospital in Maricopa County.

The Show spoke with her to learn about violence, mental illness and where the two intersect — and where they don’t.
