Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador enthusiastically welcomed the weekend win of Colombia’s new president-elect Gustavo Petro.
During his daily press conference Monday, he even cued up a celebratory cumbia after describing the electoral victory of former leftist guerilla as “historic.”
López Obrador described Petro’s election as part of a new wave of progressive governments winning power in Latin America, and said the two leaders look forward to working together toward regional integration, along with the United States and Canada. \
He compared the project to the beginning steps of what eventually became the European Union.
