The Bureau of Land Management manages more than 245 million acres, most of it in 12 western state, but not all of that land is easily accessible.
In 2019, Congress passed legislation to help open up federal lands that were difficult to access but could provide opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The following year, it asked for input to help identify these areas and received 6,000 responses.
The agency has an online portal so members of the public can nominate such places. The site opened up for nominations in May and will close June 30.
