Nonprofit sector especially affected by hiring crisis

The labor shortage is a nationwide issue, but for nonprofit organizations, the struggle to find workers and pay living wages has been especially difficult.

Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield said organizations have to compete with employers that pay higher wages and allow more remote work opportunities. Nonprofits don’t have that luxury, yet some communities need in-person services.

“If you are an individual and you need a critical service for your life, your family, your health, and not to have that level of service there, it’s a whole other issue that our community should be really concerned about," Merrifield said.

Merrifield said that nonprofit employers can promote benefits other than pay to withstand what has been called the Great Resignation.
