Texas migrant tragedy on agenda for Mexican president’s next meeting with Biden

Mexico’s president says the tragic deaths of at least 50 migrants in Texas will be on the agenda during his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

The vast  majorityof victims identified as of Tuesday morning were Mexican nationals, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised to aid families in recovering their loved ones' remains. He also said Mexico will investigate elements of the incident that fall under its jurisdiction.

López Obrador described the abandoned semi-truck found with dozens of dead and injured Mexicans and Central Americans as “bitter proof” that more needs to be done to support people across the region so they don’t feel compelled to leave their homes for the United States.

He said the tragedy, and ways to avoid its repetition, will be a central theme of his July 12 meeting with Biden. Increasing temporary work visas was one specific proposal he mentioned.
