A U.S. District Court has ruled in favor of Arizona voting rights groups, paving the way for a legal challenge to a 2021 state law that critics say limits voting rights.
In 2021, Republican state lawmakers passed a law to remove someone from Arizona’s early ballot mailing list if they did not return their early ballot in at least one of four prior elections — meaning a primary or general election in two successive election years.
The judge ruled challengers had presented enough evidence that the measure violates the federal Voting Rights Act because of its potential impact on minority voters.
The ruling doesn’t necessarily mean the law will be overturned — just that voting rights groups like Mi Familia Vota will now get their day in court to challenge it.
