Gov. Doug Ducey signs largest border spending package in Arizona history

Gov. Doug Ducey signed legislation Thursday that will direct $335 million to construct physical fencing and border security technology.

The spending is part of a $564 million border security package that is the most ever spent by the state.

The legislation does not say when or where the materials will have to be built, and the governor’s office said no planning document was available.

Most of the border is on federal land, limiting where the state can use the money.

Ducey wrote a letter to Arizona’s Secretary of State Katie Hobbs claiming Washington has not done its job.

In addition to the fencing, another $209 million will be used for border enforcement, including building a new jail in Cochise County, emergency operations, and funds for local sheriffs.
