Sonora aiding in search for suspects in priests’ murder

After two Jesuit priests were killed in Chihuahua last month, neighboring Sonora is helping to search for suspects.

The state Attorney’s Office in Chihuahua, which borders Sonora to the east, is offeringroughly $250,000 for help apprehending José Noriel Portillo Gil, the principal suspect in the murder of priests Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, as well as tour guide. That’s the highest reward ever offered by the office, which is also seeking help from its counterparts in Sonora and elsewhere.

Sonoran state Attorney Claudia Indira Contreras said her office was asked to be on the lookout for the suspect, known as el Chueco, or the crooked one, if he crosses into the state. In recent operations, federal officials say they have arrested 11 people linked to the criminal organization he runs.
