Why the skies have not always been so friendly to travelers this summer

The summer travel season has been a bit of a bumpy ride so far, especially for air travelers.

Fares are up, as are the number of canceled and delayed flights. On July 1, at the start of the long holiday weekend, almost 2.5 million people passed through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints — but the flight tracker FlightAware reports more than a quarter of flights were delayed on that day.
