The Better Business Bureau says the latest scam involves gas station gift cards.
Emails, surveys and social media posts may claim a consumer won a $500 gift card from Shell or another company before asking for a small fee.
But sharing credit card numbers or addresses to pay that fee can open the door to identity theft.
The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to research companies, avoid making impulse purchases and know that no legitimate company will ask for money in order to win something.
