The beach town of San Carlos, Sonora, has been in the spotlight in recent weeks after a series of violent events. Now officials say it’s related to a territorial dispute between criminal groups.
Sonora’s Attorney General Claudia Indira Conteras says that officials are making progress on investigations into several recent attacks in San Carlos.
She said a territorial dispute between rival cartels in the region has spurred recent violence, which has included two bars being set on fire and the deaths of three people in the small, tourist town.
So far two people have been arrested in the case. And Contreras says there is an ongoing operation being led by the Navy to safeguard both local residents and visitors to San Carlos.
However, local business groups say the recent events have already impacted tourism as bars and restaurants have had fewer patrons since the first killing in mid-June.
