AMLO: Major solar plant underway in Sonora will be replicated in other border states

After a visit to the United States, Mexico’s president says his country could help provide energy to the U.S. through major investments in new solar farms.

A massive solar energy plant under way in Sonora is expected to provide 1000-megawatts of energy for Sonora and Baja California. And President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says it will be the inspiration for similar projects in other Mexico border states.

The president says there is interest among investors to fund energy projects in Mexico — including new solar plants in border states that could export energy to the United States.

He says in the next few years some $40 billion is expected to go toward solar farms, liquified natural gas facilities and other projects — all of which would be primarily owned by the national energy commission.
