A new survey shows an increase in cyberbullying in Mexico, and women and girls were the most impacted by those online attacks.
Last year, about 22% of internet users over the age of 12 in Mexico experienced cyber attacks, according to new data from the national statistics agency. That’s up from the previous year.
The survey looked at a wide range of cyberbullying, including offensive messages, threats, sexual content or advances or having personal information or images shared without permission.
Nationwide, women and girls were more likely to be targets of online abuse and reported greater negative impacts, like fear and insecurity.
In neighboring Sonora, girls 12-19 reported the highest rates of cyberbullying, with more than a third of respondents experiencing some kind of online attack in the past 12 months.
