AZ independent voters can cast ballots in Aug. 2 primary

Primary elections can lead to confusion for Independent voters on whether they can cast a ballot or not.

Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer says that registered independents are able to vote in the upcoming election.

“All you need to know is that for this year, in this Aug. 2 primary, if you’re an independent you absolutely can participate. You can participate by mail or you can participate in person," Richer said.

Independents will have to choose whether they want to participate in the Democratic or Republican primary election. The choice will not impact registration status.

Those who want an early ballot will have to request one by July 22.
