Why Netflix and Hulu are infatuated with shows about Mormons

A recent string of streaming programs is focused either on members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or people who've decided to leave the religion.

One, "Under the Banner of Heaven," is a mixture of facts and creative license based on the bestseller by Jon Krakauer. Two others are documentaries — “Mormon No More” and “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey.”

So why is this a period featuring more stories and shows about Mormons and their faith? And does it signal a trend?

Jana Riess is a columnist for the Religion News Service and author of “The Next Mormons: How Millennials Are Changing the LDS Church.”

The Show spoke with her to learn about the surge in content, and the conversation began with her explaining why so many networks and streaming services are interested in Mormon-related programs right now.
