Top U.S., Mexican law enforcement officials discuss extradition of Caro Quintero

This week top Mexican and U.S. law enforcement officials discussed the requested extradition of a drug kingpin charged in the slaying of a DEA agent and recently arrested in Sinaloa.

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland congratulated his Mexican counterpart Alejandro Gertz on the arrest of Rafael Caro Quintero, who was taken into custody by Mexican security forces last week, according to a U.S. Department of Justice release.

Quintero is wanted in the U.S. on a number of charges, some stemming from his alleged involvement in the 1985 kidnapping and murder of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Gertz and Garland discussed what was described as their “shared commitment” to work toward Quintero’s eventual extradition.

For the time being, Quintero’s immediate extradition has been blockedby a Mexican judge.
