The Navajo Nation could legalize same-sex marriage, adoption by same-sex couples

As Congress takes steps to codify federal protections for same-sex marriage, the Navajo Nation may be moving toward legalizing it for the first time.

The legislation, introduced by delegate Eugene Tso, would also permit same-sex couples to adopt children. At this time, approximately 40 out of the more than 500 federally-recognized Native American nations recognize same-sex marriage.

For more on the potential change and its impact, The Show spoke with journalist Noel Smith about the proposed legislation. Until recently, she was a reporter for the Farmington Daily Times and covered this story. The conversation began with Smith describing what the bill would do if approved.
