Phoenix names Baltimore’s Michael Sullivan interim police chief as DOJ investigation continues

City Manager Jeff Barton announced Baltimore’s Michael Sullivan will take over as the interim police chief in September. Current Chief Jeri Williams announced her retirement in May. In a statement, the city says Williams will leave her post following a transition period and onboarding.

Sullivan takes over amid a Department of Justice investigation into Phoenix Police Department. The investigation includes reviews of policies, training, and use of force, as well as treatment of those experiencing homeless and with disabilities.

Barton says it was a priority to name a leader who will “guide the department through the DOJ investigation.”

Sullivan is expected to serve in his role for one to two years, while the city conducts a nationwide search for a permanent chief. He began his career with the Louisville Metro Police Department before joining the Baltimore Police Department in 2019.
