Among Mexican border states, Sonora shows strongest year-over-year growth

Neighboring Sonora is showing strong economic growth over the last year.

Sonora’s economy has grown nearly 5% since the first trimester of 2021, the seventh fastest rate in Mexico, and the fastest among the country’s six border states. That’s according to recently released data from the National Statistics and Geography Institute (INEGI).

At 1.5%, the state’s quarter-to-quarter growth was more modest, and came in well below the border states of Tamaulipas and Chihuahua.

Francisco Acuña , head of the state’s sustainable development counsel, said in a statement that the data shows that Sonora is recovering momentum and regaining the confidence of consumers and investors. Like many Mexican states, Sonora’s economy collapsed in the early months of the pandemic, and has since steadily recovered.
