Sonoran governor: Grupo Mexico to make major investments in state

The governor of neighboring Sonora, Mexico, says a major conglomerate plans to make a substantial investment there in coming years.

Grupo México, which has a major mining presence in Sonora, will invest some 38 billion pesos — or nearly $1.9 billion — in the state over the next six years. That’s according to comments from a company executive and Governor Alfonso Durazo.

Durazo said the investments will lead to the creation of around 11,500 jobs. Among the investments are two major mining projects and new infrastructure at a plant on the Arizona border in Agua Prieta.
