Guidelines released for mine cleanup program that could benefit Navajo Nation

The bipartisan infrastructure bill provided funds to clean up environmental hazards such as abandoned mines, and an Arizona tribe will be eligible for some of that funding.

Coal mines once provided jobs on the Navajo Nation. But they have been shuttered, and some say the cleanup has been slow.

Abandoned mines can leave behind health and safety hazards, including waste piles, open pits, methane leaks, unstable slopes and damaged watersheds.

The Biden administration recently released guidance on how states and tribes may apply for more than  $700 million in funding for reclamation projects.

The funds will also provide jobs to local communities.
