Abandoned mines can leave behind health and safety hazards, including waste piles, open pits, methane leaks, unstable slopes and damaged watersheds.
The Biden administration recently released guidance on how states and tribes may apply for more than $700 million in funding for reclamation projects.
The funds will also provide jobs to local communities.
