Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix installs new bishop

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix has a new leader. Bishop John P. Dolan was most recently an auxiliary bishop with the San Diego diocese.

Pope Francis appointed Dolan to replace Bishop Thomas Olmstead, who retired on his 75th birthday in January. A Mass to install the new bishop was held Tuesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Avondale.

“As we begin our journey together and as we reflect on our readings today, may I offer three proposals: simply, be good, be loved and be blessed,” Dolan said at the Mass.

Dolan is 60 years old. He is the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, which serves about 1.1 million Catholics and covers about half of Arizona.
