Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has announced that it’s investigating an ex-president for several federal crimes.
Former President Enrique Peña Nieto is under investigation for alleged crimes including money laundering, illicit enrichment and electoral crimes, according to federal prosecutors.
In a statement, the office said it’s developing several lines of investigation into Peña Nieto, who was president from 2012 to 2018 and now resides in Spain.
The announcement comes about a month after Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit said it discoveredthe former president had received some $1.3 million in international transfers.
At the time, Peña Nieto denied wrongdoing in a series of tweets. He has not yet publicly responded to the attorney general’s investigation, and no charges have been filed.
