Rachel Mitchell declared victory in the Republican race to be Maricopa County's next attorney.
Mitchell tweeted that Gina Godbehere, her closest opponent in the race, called to concede Wednesday evening. As of Wednesday, Mitchell had garnered 58 percent of the vote, maintaining a lead similar to the one she's held since results were first posted on Tuesday.
The County Board of Supervisors appointed Mitchell as the interim county attorney in April, after former county attorney Allister Adel resigned in March. This marked Mitchell’s second stint as the interim county attorney. She was also tapped after Bill Montgomery was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019.
The winner of the GOP primary will advance to the general election against Julie Gunnigle, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. Gunnigle was narrowly defeated by Adel in the 2020 general election, a race that was decided by less than 2 percentage points.
The winner of this year’s general election will serve out the remainder of Adel’s term, which runs through 2024.
