Grand Canyon celebrates, honors tribes through Heritage Days

Heritage Days return to the Grand Canyon this weekend after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Beginning in 1993 as “Paiute Days,” the three-day celebration at the Canyon’s North Rim honors the cultures of 11 area native tribes through activities, as well as dance and musical performances.

Lauren Cisneros is a park ranger for interpretation at the North Rim.

“These 11 associated tribes have, again, been calling the Grand Canyon home since time immemorial," Cisneros said. "And so we’re trying to give back and to expose visitors to these different tribes.”

While the Heritage Days celebration is exclusive to the North Rim, Cisneros says South Rim visitors can experience the Cultural Demonstration Series weekly through September.
