The fall semester is about to begin, but UA has public health concerns

This month, students at Arizona’s three public universities are returning for the new semester. But the latest public health crisis with monkeypox, plus ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, plus flu season, has university officials concerned.

Former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona is with the University of Arizona. He says this perfect storm of illness may threaten dorms and Greek life.

“Wash your hands. If you’re sick, stay home. Get vaccinated when you can. Now monkeypox, that’s a different issue for the vaccination. But the public health precautions are all the same," Carmona said.

He also says weekly public health press conferences with the University president will resume. There are at least 100 monkeypox cases reported in Maricopa County as of this week.
