More than 10 hours of violence erupted in two Mexican states this week — apparent retaliation for a military operation targeting a cartel meeting.
Cartel members blockaded roads, commandeered cars and set vehicles and businesses during what some have called a night of terror in the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato earlier this week.
Amid the chaos, the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, put out a security alert advising employees to shelter in place. The advisory has been revoked, but the consulate issued a statement limiting employee travel and reminding U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to the state.
The violence was retaliation for a military operation during a meeting between cartel members that resulted in the arrests of “influential people,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said during a press conference Thursday.
He said an additional 16 people were arrested in Jalisco and Guanajuato amid the ensuing violence, and one alleged gang member was killed.
