Sonora reported its first cases of monkeypox this week as cases continue to rise across the country.
Sonoran health officials announced Wednesday that the state had confirmed its first cases of monkeypox in two men, ages 21 and 54. One was detected in the beach town of Puerto Penasco, or Rocky Point, and the other in nearby Caborca.
Both men started having symptoms in early August and are now isolating and in stable condition, according to the health department.
The two cases come as Mexico continues to see the number of people with monkeypox rise nationwide. As of Monday, there were 252 confirmed cases, and an additional 131 suspected cases across the country.
So far, vaccines to prevent monkeypox are not available in Mexico.
