Peoria schools close due to monsoon power outages

Intense monsoon storms knocked out electricity, downed power lines and closed roads late Thursday.

Six schools in Peoria Unified School District and its virtual school are closed on Friday. In a statement, the district says power will not be restored until the school day ends.

The outages leave the schools without any air-conditioning or electricity. Peoria says downed power lines and storm damage forced the closure of several roadways throughout the city.

APS estimates around 3,000 customers in the area are impacted by the outages.
