The city of Tucson is encouraging community members to come pick up free sandbags in anticipation of a fresh slew of monsoon storms this weekend.
The effort is part of an annual city initiative called Operation Splash. Crews are sent out to barricade dip crossings that flood during storms and community members can get sand and sandbags to safeguard structures.
City managers invited the public to collect those sandbags ahead of a new series of storms expected as Arizona’s monsoons continue. A 10-bag-per-car limit is in place to preserve supplies, and community members are asked to bring their own shovels.
Heavy rain is forecasted to continue most of the weekend. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch warning for the area.
