With more rain on the way, serious impacts already seen across Sonora

The moisture is certainly welcome, but heavy rain in neighboring Sonora is also bringing trouble.

Inches and inches of rain have fallen in communities across the state, with days of rain still on tap. Videos and images of overflowing rivers, urban streets turned to raging waterways, sinkholes and landslides fill the social media pagesof Sonora’s civil protection agency.

On Thursday, a bolt of lightning also claimed the life of a 16-year-old at one of the many agricultural operations west of Hermosillo.

Fallen rocks have closed a highway between Sonora and neighboring Chihuahua, as well as another roadway that connects a number of remote mountain communities to the rest of the state. In Kino, a popular beach town, a major piece of an ocean front road collapsed.

Along with the damage, state authorities noted that Sonora’s parched reservoirs are seeing much needed water.
