The state’s largest nonprofit blood provider Vitalant has seen a 50% drop in blood supplies since the start of the summer.
Type O blood supplies, which is the most frequently used transfusion type, has fallen down to a one-day supply.
Sue Thew says the reason is primarily due to fewer blood drives due to the pandemic.
“So many organizations are still working with hybrid work forces, many of them are totally virtual, some are 50-50, but that means that we have about 20% fewer blood drives, and every blood drive we go to we are seeing fewer donors," she said.
Thew urged donors to make appointments before the Labor Day weekend, when it sees a large drop in donations.
