Officials in neighboring Sonora are hoping to make some infrastructure improvements after epic flooding caused widespread damage.
Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo said that the Guaymas Valley received nearly half a meter of rain over the weekend, an event he described as “historic.”
In Empalme, one of the most heavily impacted communities, some 1,500 homes were damaged, and dozens of people had to be rescued.
With the goal of preventing a repetition of the catastrophic flooding, Durazo said that improvements to the Punta de Agua dam and an earthen retention basin north of the cities of Guaymas and Empalme will be analyzed. Specifically, authorities hope to increase the capacity of the dam, and rebuild the basin with concrete.
