August saw a record number of people seeking food at St. Mary’s Foodbank with 150,000 people visiting during the month. That is the most visits in a month in its 55-year history.
Jerry Brown with the bank says long lines used to only happen Mondays and Fridays. Now they see them five days a week.
“It’s obvious that the impact of inflation, the impact of all the high prices and all of the raised rents and all of the things we have talked about all summer have just continued to compile,” Brown said.
Brown says other food banks that they support are also seeing 50%-60% jumps in demand around the state. He added that the demand they are seeing now has surpassed what they saw at the height of the pandemic.
