Neighboring Sonora has had five COVID-19 waves so far, and active weekly cases during the current wave have now fallen for six consecutive weeks, according to data closely tracked by independent analyst Luis Armando Moreno. There were more than 5,400 at its height, well below the winter omicron wave’s peak.
In terms of deaths and hospitalizations, Moreno called it the least impactful wave to date.
Weekly confirmed deaths have frequently been in the single digits and peaked in late July at 19, a far cry from the 150 lost during the worst week of the winter Omicron surge, and further still from the 379 logged during the first wave. In a recent tweet, Moreno said the data make clear that vaccines work.
