Number of Valley homeless seniors is on the rise

The number of homeless seniors in metro Phoenix has taken a dramatic jump. The reasons why are many: from rising rents to job losses, but solutions are desperately needed.

Lisa Glow is the CEO of the Central Arizona Shelter Services. "We're continuing to see a large increase in the number of senior citizens becoming homeless for the first time," she said.

She says the latest report from the Maricopa Association of Governments showed that between April and June, there was a 20% increase in the 62 and older population coming into the homeless system.

"That's 918 people," said Glow.

Something else that worries Glow is the growing number of women who are becoming homeless.
