After high-level meeting, AMLO says U.S. will respect sovereignty on energy issues

Mexico’s president recently met with top U.S. diplomatic officials.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday, and the two discussed migration, efforts to reduce fentanyl smuggling and climate change. Mexico’s policy of showing preference for energy produced by the state-owned utility over private producers also came up.

During his daily press conference Tuesday, López Obrador said he was told the United States’ intention is to respect the policy, and Mexico’s sovereignty on the matter.

In July, the U.S. Trade representative requesteddispute resolution consultation over the policy as allowed by the USMCA trade deal. But López Obrador said that the U.S. does not intend to punish his country over the policy, and that the words tariff or sanction weren’t used in his recent meeting.
