After being closed for two years, Camelback Mountain’s Cholla Trail is set to reopen on Sept. 30.
The Phoenix trail closed for construction and a realignment that moved the start of the trailhead from Cholla Lane to Invergordon Road. The new improvements will now give hikers the necessary amenities such as a drinking fountain, restrooms and bike racks.
“Knowing the public interest and popularity, I’m excited for the reopening of Cholla Trail as a safer trail experience for hikers and nearby residents,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said.
On Sept. 30, hikers can expect the trail to be open from sunrise to sunset. Water will be available onsite, however it will not be chilled. Restroom lights will also not be offered but this is expected to be available later in the year.
Parking for this trail will go along Invergordon Road. There will now be designated spaces for ride-share drop-off and pick-up only.
Natural Resources Division Deputy Director Jarod Rogers advises hikers take precautions. Around 200 hikers are rescued annually from Phoenix mountains and preserves.
