Mexican president responds to Ukraine peace plan’s cool reception

Mexico’s president recently proposed a peace plan for the war ignited by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador pitched his idea during an official event to commemorate the 212th anniversary of the start of Mexico’s war for independence last Friday.

After claiming that sanctions against Russia and military support for Ukraine have only worsened the conflict, he called for the creation of a committee headed by the Pope, India’s prime minister and the secretary general of the United Nations. Its purpose would be to seek an immediate end to hostilities and direct talks between Russia and Ukraine’s leaders.

An advisor to Ukraine’s president  pannedthe idea as pro-Russian. Asked about the criticism Monday, Lopez Obrador said that his proposal was still not well understood.
