The recent Mexican independence day celebration in Sonora's capital Hermosillo was observed without the traditional fireworks display, and that could be the new norm.
Instead of fireworks, drones buzzed above Hermosillo’s main plaza during the celebration, spelling words and drawing shapes with lights. The idea was to spare the city’s pets the terror of successive loud explosions. Now Gov. Alfonso Durazo has signed a decree barring the use of fireworks in state functions moving forward.
During the signing, he said the recent drone display “makes it clear that (fireworks) are perfectly substitutable.”
Durazo also encouraged municipal governments in the state to carry out similar reforms, and said that next year's drone performance would be even better.
