Mexico’s president is proposing a national referendum on the role of the country’s military in public security.
Earlier this week, a reform supported by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to that would have extended the use of the country’s armed forces in public security work through 2028 failed to get enough support in the Senate.
That came a couple weeks after a successful legislative effortthat placed the country’s National Guard under the control of the military, a move also supported by Lopez Obrador.
On Friday, AMLO, as the president is widely known, proposed a national referendum that would ask voters three questions: whether they approve of the National Guard’s creation and its performance so far, whether the armed forces should continue in public security functions through 2028 and whether the guard should be a part of the military or under the control of a civilian ministry.
