I-17 improvement project to start work this week north of Phoenix

The Arizona Department of Transportation is beginning its first phase of the Interstate 17 improvement project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point north of Phoenix.

Lane closures from the project will occur during off-peak hours, with most taking place weeknights between 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. ADOT says lane closures that impact drivers will not be scheduled on weekends or holidays.

The project will cost $446 million and aims to add capacity and reduce congestion.

It includes 15 miles of widening from Anthem Way to Black Canyon City and 8 miles of flex lanes from Black Canyon City to Sunset Point.

Along with widening and flex lane construction, the project will also widen 10 bridges and fully replace two.

The department estimates the project will take three years to complete.
